Memphis Tiger Welcomes Back Students to Peabody Elementary

It’s got huge fangs and weighs more than 1,000 pounds – say hello to Peabody Elementary’s newest addition!

Peabody adopter, Central BBQ, donated the tiger sculpture to the school.

“We love the University of Memphis and Peabody Elementary, so bringing a tiger here seemed like a natural fit.” said Central BBQ co-owner and Peabody dad, Craig Blondis. “We’re all about community pride and what could make the kids prouder than having this big guy greet them at school every morning?”

“Academic Tiger” is the name of this sculpture.  It’s one of 100 tigers created for the University of Memphis’ centennial celebration. Each was designed by a local artist. This is the only tiger by a Memphis City School high school student.

Peabody Elementary is only the second site in Cooper-Young to get a tiger. The first one?  It’s at Central BBQ on Central, of course.

So take your back-to-school picture by the Academic Tiger!  Word of warning – you can touch the big guy, but Principal Jones says don’t climb on him.  She means it, kiddos.

Many thanks to Peabody Kindergarten mom Sharon Ammons who created the images for our new Peabody Adopters Board! The board is located in the front entrance of the school. Our adopters are local businesses and organizations that regularly help Peabody Elementary with publicty, gifts-in-kind, talent, and other resources.  Please thank our local adopters with your gratitude and business:)

Kindergarten Ice Cream Social – Sweet Success

A gymnasium full of newly-minted Kindergarteners and their families received a cool reception to Peabody… the sugary, yummy kind, that is:)

Peabody Elementary Adopters, Neighborhood Church, provided the ice cream and the entertainment – balloons, face painting, and music!

This was the 2nd annual Kindergarten Ice Cream Social.  It was introduced last year to help ease kids and their families into a new school and new friends. Looks like it worked again!

This year, the Ice Cream Social welcomed some of the students from the largest Kindergarten class Peabody has had in three years.  According to Principal Kongsouly Jones, 75 Kindergarteners enrolled in the school this year – that’s 15 more than last year.  In fact, so many students enrolled that Principal Jones is hiring a fourth Kindergarten teacher!  Looks like more and more people are finding out about our great school.

Welcome to our 2011 Kindergarteners and their families!

2nd Annual Kindergarten Ice Cream Social

Kindergarteners and parents – this night is just for you!

Help your child (and yourself) ease into your first year @ Peabody Elementary.  This is a fun night for your kids to just run around and have fun with new classmates.

It’s also a great way for parents to get to know each other.  This is an event that all the big kids (and their parents!) wish they could attend, too.  But this is strictly for the Kindergartners!

When:  Thursday, August 11th

            6 p.m.

Where: The gymnasium of Peabody Elementary

Special thanks to Neighborhood Church for sponsoring this event.

Neighborhood Church is one of Peabody’s very special school adopters.  Thanks!!!
