Be a Peabody Room Parent!

Screen Shot 2013-08-31 at 9.10.48 AMYour teacher and child will love you for it!

There is no better way to form a great connection with your child’s teacher and the other parents in the classroom than being a room parent.

Here are a few things a room parent can do:

  • You or another parent have an idea that involves a collective effort by the parents in the classroom. You send an email to the parents to coordinate.
  • It’s your teacher’s birthday! Email the other parents in your classroom to get great ideas and the ball rolling on a gift!
  • Kids love a holiday party – help the parents in your classroom come together to make it awesome!

Don’t worry – you’ve got a super-amazing PTA support team to help you out.  They’ll help you understand what to do and when!

Email PTA Staff Support VPs Debbie and Asuka at Peabodyclassparent@gmail.com. Just give your name and teacher’s name, and you’ll get help to start!

Or just fill out this form!

Grandparent Luncheon at Peabody Elementary!

Screen Shot 2013-08-31 at 8.22.24 AMWhat would make you prouder growing up than having a grandparent sitting beside you at lunch?  We know that every child cannot have their gramps or gram with them for a variety of reasons, but those grandparents who do attend — can bring joy to their grandchild and the other children at the table.

This event takes quite a bit of coordination, so make sure that you’ve smoothed the way so grandparents and children can enjoy every moment.  A luncheon form was sent home in your Tuesday folder.

Or you can print this form out here and return it to school.  Grandparents Day form.

This will ensure there is enough food for everyone.

Here’s how to make sure you’ve done what you can to help grandparents really enjoy their day:

1.  Find out which day is YOUR Grandparent Luncheon day based on the student’s last name.

2.  See which time that day your child’s class section will attend the luncheon.

3.  Fill out the form. If you are prepaying, include correct amount of money.

4.  Return to your teacher or front office in a envelope labeled “Grandparent’s Luncheon”

5.  If you pre-pay, make sure to let grandparents know the tickets will be available the day of the luncheon at the Will Call table in the main foyer of the school.

Note:  You may want to inform grandparents to arrive at the school 10-15 minutes before their designated lunch time so that they can park, get will call tickets and sign in to the school.

A group of 11 energetic Christian Brothers University students spent their Saturday morning sprucing up Peabody’s backyard.

The students picked up trash and weeded Peabody’s garden.  They also cleaned out and planted flowers in the planters next to the playground!

The students were led by Peabody mom and CBU professor Emily Holmes.  This is all part of the university’s Welcome Weekend, when students return to school for the semester and perform acts of service throughout Memphis.

Peabody Students Stage Back-to-School Skit

Students demonstrating use of the, “No Bullying,” box.

Students demonstrating use of the “No Bullying” box

By Deirdre Jones / Peabody Elementary International Studies Coordinator

Peabody Elementary’s first school-wide assembly resembled a small theater production more than it did your average school assembly. Academic and behavior expectations were explained and reinforced through role playing. The students used skits to demonstrate the required behavior expectations for the cafeteria, hallway, and restroom.

Then, they “walked the runway” to a snazzy hip hop beat showing off the appropriate selections and colors for the school uniform.

The second and final half of the program focused on bullying. Students used drama to show the “bully circle,” how to help a friend who is being bullied, and the “No Bullying” box, which we will be housed in the cafetorium. Anonymous tips about bullying can be placed in the box for further investigation.

Principal Melanie Nelson and Counselor Christopher Jones acted as creative directors. In addition to developing the skits, they also engaged the audience members by having them state what they noticed after each presentation. The assembly was an excellent example of Ben Franklin’s popular quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

Because Peabody Elementary’s students are involved and actively engaged in the learning process, they are off to a great start!
